PalkStrait LateCretaceous Fm

Period:
Cretaceous

Age Interval:
Campanian-Maastrichtian

Province:
SriLanka Palk Strait

Type Locality and Naming

Palk Strait (between Sri Lanka and India); only described in PalkBay well, but Pesalai well shows this interval without any details.

[Figure: Generalized geologic map of Sri Lanka (from Edirisooriya et al., 2016, Geol. Mag. 155:907-920)]

Lithology and Thickness

Sandy claystone. Ca. 400 m (Palk Bay well) of calcareous claystones with minor sandstones; of upper bathyal setting.

Lithology Pattern:
Pelagic marl

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Apparently unconformity either on basement of Charnokitic origin Dolorite igneous rocks (PalkBay and Pesalai wells); or on PalkStrait EarlyCretaceous Fm (if projected to Delft well)

Upper contact

Unconformity with PalkStrait Eocene Fm (limestone) in Palk Bay well where Paleocene seems absent.

Regional extent

Found only in PalkBay well of Palk Strait (between Sri Lanka and southern tip of India); but Pesalai Well is indicated as having Late Cretaceous (ca. 900 m); but no lithology or age information given.
